The Farm Antiques | Inventory

The Farm of Wells, Maine has been providing discriminating connoisseurs beautifully crafted period antiques from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries since 1967.  Our family business has concentrated on finding stylish antiques for formal, as well as, informal situations.  Our creed:  live comfortably with antique furniture and accessories, enjoy them for their design, craftsmanship, fine materials and warmth of character.

Our Farm, nestled in 220 acres of the Maine countryside, just three miles from the ocean is where our hearts reside.  This is reflected in our antique paintings.  We acquire wonderful DSC_3926ship's portraits and maritime scenes from the 19th century; we have a penchant for animal paintings, particularly horses, dogs, and sheep.  Landscapes and still lifes are also found here.  We cherish early prints -- botanicals, classical subjects, ships, architectural renderings, animals, coaching and hunting scenes.  We have them sympathetically framed, often in custom made studio frames that draw attention to their engraved, etched or lithographed details.

Oriental porcelains have been a very special part of our studies for 45 years.  Chinese export porcelain of the 18th century, particularly underglaze blue in unusual patterns or shapes, as well as Chinese tomb figures from the Han, Tang and Ming dynasties are displayed.  Here you will also find a large selection of 19th century Japanese Imari porcelains, selected for the finesse of their decoration or the rarity of their shape.

Metalware is always in abundance here at The Farm.  English brass, copper, and a large diverse stock of silverplate add spark and spirit to the surroundings.

And we have boxes!  We love the elegance of the 18th and 19th century teacaddies with their myriad shapes and sophisticated inlays of exotic woods.  We marvel at the complexities of writing boxes with their hidden drawers and organizational idiosyncracies.  Apothecary boxes hold endless fascination with their bottles, scales, mortar and pestles.

Our business philosophy is simple; we try to treat our clients as we would like to be treated.  We rarely strip furniture, but we do clean it so that it glows and shows the inherent beauty of the wood.  We level drawers so they ride in and out of a chest or desk easily.  If a leather on a desk can be rejuvenated, we will do that; if not, we will replace it with the finest hand dyed tooled leather available.  Minor repairs should be expected in furniture that has survived through the centuries.  Major repairs are always listed on each item.  Porcelain will have all repairs noted.  In short, the antiques at The Farm are meticulously and tastefully ready to be used and enjoyed.

If fine, high quality antiques hold appeal for you, please browse through these pages which show some of our extensive inventory.  Better yet, stop by and visit with us.  We enjoy meeting friends - old and new.  You will never feel pressured to "buy", and you will be able to see our collection first hand at your leisure.
